Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve

This is the spot to observe red squirrels in a gorgeous setting, as well as a variety of bird species. Beautiful old woodlands with well-kept walkways.

After struggling to find the back way into the reserve so I would be at the hide, I finally found it a fair distance down Burt House linen the left. There is a wooden walkway, and a good sized hide overlooking the wetland where I saw a King fisher and a Buzzard amongst other birds. Obviously the main draw was being less than five feet from two Red Squirrels, they sat there happily while I took photos right next to the hide and walkway. All I took was a small bag of Squirrel food I bought from a local garden centre and some change to put in the donation box at the entrance. I thought it was without a doubt the easiest and best place to get near, see and photograph Red Squirrels. I would suggest cycling or walking to the entrance as it is a narrow single track lane.
