The island is quite small, with nine major towns and dozens of little villages to visit during your visit. On the Isle of Wight, it can be tough to decide where to stay and what to do, and you don’t want to miss out on anything the island has to offer.
Brading
With a magnificent natural setting, this is one of the smallest and oldest communities on the Isle of Wight. Brading is off the usual path, but it’s well worth a visit if you’re interested in history. Here you’ll find some of the island’s oldest structures, many of which have unique and unusual features. While in town, many visitors also pay a visit to the Roman Villa. Take a look at our top attractions in Brading.
Sandown
A Victorian pier and a lovely seaside town make this a popular tourist destination. Sandown is popular with tourists since it is a nice place to spend a day at the beach. There’s lots to see and do that isn’t near the water, including Sandown Levels, Sandown Meadows Nature Reserve, the Isle of Wight Zoo, and Dinosaur Isle. Find our favourite spots in Sandown.
Ryde
This is the island’s most populous settlement, with tens of thousands of visitors each year. Ryde is famous for its carnivals, which feature the oldest procession in England. It’s worth checking to see if you can attend one of the five events held during the year. This community offers kilometres of lovely, undeveloped sandy beach as well as a variety of family-friendly activities. Discover the must-see attractions in Ryde.
Cowes
The River Medina separates this ‘all-rounder’ mediaeval town, which offers diversions for people of all ages. Cowes is known for its sailing contests, but it is also a famous nightlife destination, with live music in many of the clubs. While you’re here, take a short boat journey to East Cowes, which is also a wonderful town. Get to know Cowes’ best attractions.
Newport
It is also the capital of the Isle of Wight and the site of the Isle of Wight Festival. If you want to view some independent stores before stopping for lunch, Newport is the place to go. Because it is located in the geographic centre of the Isle of Wight, it is one of the easiest towns to visit regardless of where you are staying. Visit our recommended spots in Newport for a perfect day out.
Ventnor
This is a little, odd town that sprouts up alongside the cliffs, making it stand out. Many visitors come to this town for the beach at Ventnor Bay, which has the UK’s highest number of sunlight hours. If you like seafood, try the local specialty, Ventnor Bay crab, and while you’re here, stop into the Island’s tiny bar. See what else there is to discover in Ventnor.
There are a wealth of gorgeous unique spots to pick from, whether you wish to visit a mediaeval town or stroll through a beach town, and you can easily fill your vacation with a range of excellent day trips all around the Island.
