The Ventnor Downs rise sharply above Ventnor, a Victorian beach town. The scenery has a Mediterranean feel to it, with the glittering sea below and the holm oak trees that have colonised the south facing chalk slopes.
There are excellent views in all directions from Luccombe Down, the highest point on the Isle of Wight at 787 feet (240 metres) above sea level. With Portsmouth in the background, look east to Sandown Bay and Culver Cliffs.
On Bonchurch Down, watch for Adonis blue butterflies, see the spectacular display of bluebells or the blossoming heather on Luccombe Down, spot a herd of feral goats, or gaze above for buzzards and ravens swooping over the steep slopes.
